Classic Rwanda—Culture, Gorillas & Forest Canopies

This 10-day journey through Rwanda blends Kigali’s contemporary culture and reflective memorials with the dramatic highland scenery of the Volcanoes and Nyungwe regions, intimate gorilla encounters, chimp tracking, and relaxing lakeside time at Lake Kivu.

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali

Arrive at Kigali International Airport. Transfer to your hotel for check-in and some rest. Spend the afternoon exploring Kigali’s vibrant neighbourhoods, visiting Inema Arts Center and Niyo Art Gallery to view contemporary Rwandan art. Enjoy dinner at a local restaurant serving traditional Rwandan cuisine.

Day 2: Kigali City & Genocide Memorials

Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial in the morning for a respectful and informative introduction to Rwanda’s recent history. In the afternoon, drive to the Nyamata Genocide Memorial to continue reflection. Time permitting, stop at Kimironko Market to browse crafts and local produce.

Day 3: King’s Palace & Ethnographic Museum (Nyanza & Huye)

Drive south to Nyanza to tour the King’s Palace Museum and view traditional royal architecture and cultural exhibits (and the royal cows). Continue to Huye (Butare) to visit the National Museum/ Ethnographic Museum for in-depth cultural history. Overnight in Huye or return to Kigali, depending on your preference.

Day 4: Journey to Volcanoes National Park

Scenic drive to the northern highlands and Volcanoes National Park. Stop at the Twin Lakes (Burera & Ruhondo) for photos and birdwatching. Check into your lodge near the park and enjoy an evening cultural experience such as a visit to the Gorilla Guardians Village.

Day 5: Gorilla Trekking Adventure

Early morning briefing and departure for gorilla trekking with park guides. Trek through the forest to locate a habituated gorilla family and spend the permitted 60 minutes observing them. Return to the lodge for relaxation; optional guided nature walk in the afternoon.

Day 6: Volcano Hike or Golden Monkey Trek

Choose an optional hike to Mount Bisoke (famous for its crater lake) or a longer trek to Mount Karisimbi for experienced hikers (multi-day). Alternatively, opt for the Golden Monkey trek in nearby forest habitats. Return to the lodge for dinner and evening stories.

Day 7: Transfer to Lake Kivu (Gisenyi / Kibuye)

Drive west to the shores of Lake Kivu (choose Gisenyi or Kibuye). Enjoy a relaxing boat ride, lakeside walk, and spectacular sunset views. Dinner at a lakeside restaurant and overnight at a waterfront resort.

Day 8: Nyungwe Forest National Park

Travel to Nyungwe Forest National Park. In the afternoon, experience the canopy walk for an elevated view of the rainforest. Spot colobus monkeys, other primates and many bird species along the trails. Overnight at a nearby lodge.

Day 9: Chimpanzee Tracking & Tea Tour

Early morning chimpanzee tracking with trained guides in Nyungwe. Later, visit a local tea plantation for a guided tour and tasting to learn about Rwanda’s tea production. Return to the lodge for your final night in the forested highlands.

Day 10: Return to Kigali & Departure

Scenic drive back to Kigali. Time for last-minute shopping or a coffee at a local café. Transfer to Kigali International Airport for your departure flight.
